When it comes time to move, you need to give proper notice to the landlord to end your tenancy. You must also give the correct amount of notice. If you end your lease before it expires or give notice incorrectly, you may have to pay compensation such as additional rent and break lease fees to the landlord. You may use the form provided on this page to give notice or you may provide your own. Remember, your notice must be in writing and include:
- The address of the premises
- The day on which you intend to vacate the premises and return all keys.
- The grounds for giving the notice
Before you return the keys, it is critical that everything that needs to be done is 100% complete. Once keys are handed in, your tenancy has legally ended. You will not be able to “go back” to the property to collect personal items, attend to cleaning or mow lawns, etc. Any items left at the property may be removed and stored at your expense, and any cleaning or gardening not done to a satisfactory standard will be completed by professional contractors, at your expense.
