The Junction was named after the junction of railways built for the collieries of the Merewether area in 1880. The Junction is a small, tightly held area which complements the CBD by providing local services in a residential area that is close to the city centre.

According to the 2006 Census there were 1,295 people in 667 dwellings in The Junction, with separate houses, flats and apartments. Majority of the houses are situated on small blocks of land from 200sqm to around 450sqm. Over the last 10 or 15 years lots of homes have been extensively renovated or knocked down and re built.

Because the area is small in size, if you live in The Junction, you are just a short walk to the commercial centre located around Union Street, Kenrick Street, and Glebe Rd. The Junction Fair offers a supermarket, and the Junction Village is home to a number of boutiques and mixed business including a great variety of stand out restaurants and cafes. The Junction has one small park, Rowland Park and the area is also well serviced by buses. Both St Josephs primary and The Junction Primary are situated in this suburb. The closest high schools are Newcastle High or Newcastle Grammar. One of the other main reasons The Junction is so sought after, is its close proximity to the local beach, only a ten minute walk and also Darby Street, another popular dining and shopping area.
