This area is the historic heart of Newcastle, and the site of the first town plan laid out by Henry Dangar in 1823. The alignment of streets in The Hill still follow Dangar’s plan.
Views of the suburb to the harbour are dominated by the iconic Christ Church Cathedral, a landmark in a precinct dominated by steep topography.
Many of Newcastle’s historic homes from the original settlements still stand within this area alongside new developments of apartments, villas and townhouses with all these choices there are many housing options to choose from.
Those with families – Public and private schools are all located in this area, and all lie on major public transport routes. A few major attractions close by are the Regional Art Museum, National Library and Foreshore area which houses the new Maritime Museum.
A short stroll down the hill and you find yourself at Darby Street – best known for its restaurants and boutique shops. Several Parks and cliff top areas which are available to the public are great vantage points to watch the ships waiting to come into port, hang gliders also use these vantage points to take off and land. King Edward Park hosts the annual hill climb each year an event any motoring enthusiast wouldn’t miss and during the summer months hosts open air movies for all to watch.
