Rankin Park is a suburb of Newcastle. It is located 11 kilometres west of Newcastle’s central business district. It is split between the city of Lake Macquarie and city of Newcastle local government areas. The suburb began as a housing estate named Cambridge Hills. The local preschool on McCaffery Drive retains the former estates name. To the east of the suburb contains, George McGregor park a 19.66-hectare (48.58 acre) bushland reserve managed by Newcastle city council.
The population is approximately 2568 (2006 census). Residents of the area tend to live in the suburb for more than five years and is mainly populated by families with school children. The suburb is in close proximity to the John Hunter Hospital, Blackbutt reserve and major shopping centres.
