Merewether beach runs along the southern coastal strip and includes Merewether Ocean Baths. The first ocean baths at Merewether were built in 1926, the remains of the first small baths are still used slightly to the north. Merewether beach is patrolled all year.
Merewether is the most populated inner city suburb of Newcastle. Merewether Heights is an adjacent suburb and is also popular with the locals. The suburb’s enjoy good access to schools with many public primary school’s, child care facilities and a pre-school in the area, although Merewether does not have a library branch of its own, residents are close to the City Library in Newcastle as well as the Adamstown Branch on Brunker Road
Llewellyn Street is home to a number of mixed businesses, a post office and a Leagues club. Merewether also has easy access to The Junction commercial area, and only a short distance away fines you in the CBD of Newcastle.
Merewether and Merewether Heights has a diversity of housing types to suit, families, the aged and couples. All parts of Merewether are an easy bus ride to and from the Newcastle CBD.
Merewether has a number of local parks, including Dixon Park near the beach, Mitchell Park, Campbell Park and Charlotte Street Reserve. Some of these parks include barbecue facilities and playground equipment. The area is also home to parts of Glenrock State Recreation Park, which provides walking trails.
