Cardiff is located at the northern end of Lake Macquarie and is central to both the western and eastern areas of the city. Bus routes and rail links provide easy access to other Lake Macquarie centers, as well as Newcastle and Sydney.

Cardiff contains one of the largest industrial estates in the Lower Hunter. The industrial park occupies over 100 hectares of industrial land and houses and more than 500 businesses. A diverse range of industries is present including transport, engineering, mining, and food manufacturing.
